Putting the Rabbit in the Hat
What Book and Why
As the title above might give away, the book I chose to read is Putting the Rabbit in the Hat by Brian Cox. I selected this book for a couple reasons, but the most basic of these being the fact that I liked the name of the book from the get-go and it still stood out to me the most even after I had looked at the other options. As for my second reason, Brian Cox's face and name were the only ones I recognized upon first glance at the list of books provided. Because I have never read a complete biography like this, I thought it would be best to chose a book about someone that I have at least heard of or have some sort of connection to (even if it is as simple as me being a fan of the "Jason Bourne" movies series that Mr. Cox has a role in). My final reason for choosing this book was that I had seen some reports on social media and other websites about the biography because of its gossipy and brutally honest remarks which seemed to stir a bit of a reaction from readers and in turn enticed me enough to want to read it myself. I'm not completely sure what I hope to get out of my reading yet. I guess for now I'm looking for some interesting stories and some relatable experiences that I can use to help guide my own life.
What I've Learned and My Impressions So Far
So far, I have learned that Mr. Cox is from Dundee, Scotland and had a rather tough upbringing. His father died when he was just eight years old all while his mother battled mental health issues from the time he was a toddler well into his adult life. Attempting to find some relief and make a new home for himself, Brian discovered his calling and where he would find refuge for the next chapter in his life--the theatre. On top of this evolving story about his journey, Mr. Cox regularly jumps around to discuss certain people he met along the way and their impacts on him whether it be positive or negative. The way in which the text is written comes off in a rather lighthearted manner despite a lot of the content so far being quite the contrary. Mixed in with his array of sad stories, Brian has plenty of humorous ones to make you smirk while you read in addition to the backstage drama he's witnessed that the audience could never see. Another aspect of the writing that was noticeable to me was how fluidly the words flow together. The simple structure and word choice makes the book feel as if Brian Cox is just sitting there talking to you and telling a story about his life. I am glad I choose this book and am excited to see where it goes next.
